Summary: Ned, the son of a country policeman, tells the story from his upbeat perspective. He is prepared to have a go at everything without too much thought of a possible outcome. He wrestles with his conscience and his convent school upbringing, as well as respecting his parents' high expectations of their children. He would rather discover from his outdoor experiences than from inside a classroom. His soft-boiled nature ensures the underdog has his backing and his mates his loyalty. A deep love and appreciation of his Mum's constant caring, his Dad's understanding, and, yes, his discipline, made his formative years with his sisters and brother a cheerful and contented time
